Will wireless internet work on my new DELL laptop?
I’m buying a new DELL laptop, will wireless internet work on it?
I want to know for example, if I take this laptop with me to a place that offers free wireless internet, can I use it there? Even if it’s in the parking lot of the hotel / place?
It comes with a "Intel 5100 Wireless-N (1×2) Half Mini-Card" is that what would allow me to access the internet while I’m in my car, for example??

How can I access a Unix tar tape on my SCSI DAT drive on my Windows PC?
I have some tar files that were created on a Unix workstation that I would like to access from my PC. I have a SCSI DAT drive (Archive Python 28388-XXX) on my PC but the software that I have on my system (Win98) only recognizes Windows backup format. I have tried DATman99, but in the raw block reading mode I have to know in advance how many blocks are in a tar archive file and I don’t see how to determine that directly from the information that I have.
I have tried doing a ‘live’ boot of Linux (Knoppix), but it doesn’t recognize my SCSI drive directly. I am familiar with HP-UX and the ’stape’ driver, but I can’t find the equivalent in the Knoppix distribution.
I prefer free/open source solutions, but I would pay to get a workable solution that can safely transfer these files.
Thank you in advance for your time!
it just might access easily.
How do I get remote access and how do I use it?
I have got my computer and a few others at home and I want to be able to see what people are looking at and to control their computer so I need your help to tell me how to get remote access for free and how to use it.

remote desktop connections: how to access remote pcs out of house?
I have a couple of computers that I want to access from different houses? How can i do that. is it something to do with IP addresses or what?
Thanks Please Respond ASAP
PS: I want to use "Windows Remote Desktop Connection" !
I’ve written an article about the best free options for setting up a remote connection, you can see it here: http://www.jimstechtips.com/?p=11
The easiest options out there are probably LogMeIn (www.logmein.com) or TeamViewer (www.teamviewer.com).
There are also VNC options such as UltraVNC, RealVNC or TightVNC, but they’re a bit more difficult to use because you will usually need to open up a port or two in your router to get them working.
LogMeIn and TeamViewer do not require any modifications to your router or firewall.
what is a remote computer and how is it related to my broadband modem?
i used to have no problem with my cricket broadband modem and now, on my new hp laptop (which runs on windows 7) it is downloaded, and almost works. my problem arises when i try to connect, it’ll start to then say authenticating then right before it connects it says something about it being canceled by the remote computer. before i updated the program it said to "ping the remote computer" i have no idea what any of this means. any help?
I’m trying to understand your problem correctly. Is your Windows 7 HP laptop the only computer having trouble with your Cricket broadband modem? And what is being downloaded that "almost works?" It’s a little unclear.
To answer your question about the remote computer… A remote computer is any device that your laptop (or desktop, whichever you’re using) is trying to connect to "remotely" (from far away).
Your connection is being rejected/refused (and thus cancelled) by your ISPs server. This can be caused by any number of reasons, from the remote computer/server being down, but more likely some misconfiguration on your laptop.
Do you still have your "old" computer/laptop? If you’re still in possession of that computer, try connecting it to your Cricket broadband modem. If it works–and you’re able to connect to the internet again, then you know it’s more likely than not, a configuration problem with the new HP laptop.
You should contact your ISP via phone, or by e-mail (on a computer with working access to the internet) and they should be able to talk you through on how to fix things.
how can i prevent any remote access to my computer?
i want to make sure that no one remotely access my computer atleast without my knowledge .
The surest way is to not use a wireless router. If you must, make sure you have a strong password also called and encryption key. (Linksys’s key is 22 characters – upper case lower case numbers and letters. It is impossible for someone to guess.)

How do I enable bluetooth remote control on my pc using my sony ericsson w850i?
I’ve got a sony ericsson w850i and one bluetooth radio connected into my pc and I’m trying to use my phone as a remote control on my computer but I can’t… Can anyone shine light into my situation?
from what i understand your phone is already able to connect through bluetooth to your pc, but the remote control doesn’t work
in order for the remote control to work, your computer must have enabled the "Human interface device" service for bluetooth, i’m guessing this is the problem
look for "Human interface device" in your Device Manager (if you’re using windows) and in your bluetooth configuration. this is all you need to have on your computer for the remote control to work.
you need to enable this Human Interface Device, you can look for ways to enable it by checking your Bluetooth configuration or you can try reinstalling your Bluetooth on your computer and see if it asks you about this
remote assistance?
I have a wireless netgear router, with PS3, my laptop, downstairs home computer connected, all wireless. I want to download remote assistance software, for my laptop, to access the computers downstairs freely and control them. Is there any free software that will alow me to do that?
I have windows vista on this laptop, others = windows xp. the house has one IP. I can block sites via netgear router settings, but i also want to monitor sites and chat to computer users. do you guys know ANY free, good software?
With TeamViewer you can remotely control any PC anywhere on the Internet as if you were sitting right in front of it. No installation is required, just run the application on both sides and connect – even through tight firewalls. TeamViewer is free for personal use.

UltraVNC is a Free helpdesk remote control software. With it, you can access your PC from anywhere and remotely help people and customers. Both Host and Remote components can be installed together on the same computer, or they can be installed separately on different computers.

If you are surfing the web using Remote Access , where will a geolocator think you are?
If you are in Location A and access your computer (in location B) using Remote Acess software and surf the internet using location B’s computer web browser, would geolocation software think you are in location A or location B? Even when I travel, I want to appear like I am in location B.

Sorry for the repeat in added details.
You’ll get what you want – I just spent a week "being in" New York when I was in Virginia. There’s no way anyone can tell that you’re not sitting at the desktop at home.
If i used a Server OS on an older desktop PC will people be able to access it to download files from me?
Ive used server progs on Xp but cant ever get em to work the way i need em to, I have an old gateway 400 mhz PC so if I ran a server OS would people be able to access it without using any kinda remote software or 3rd party server software cause i send files to people outta town and im thinkin this would be useful, I dont have a spare monitor to use with it or anything i was gonna plug it in to ethernet and use it remotely from this one… will my idea work without using any other software…??
You can install and use linux on an older machine, use the server load and the machine should work just fine. To access files from a REMOTE location, you have to setup the machine to allow the conenction as well as setup your router/modem etc to allow the connection. Many ISP’s do not allow you to run servers on residential lines so you need to check the "terms of service" with your ISP to see if running a server is even allowed.
Setting up the system and getting is working is NOT trivial. It takes an understanding of networking and lots of work to configure. It also will take the correct "Pacakges" installed on both the server and the remote in order to work. The easiest to use would be FTP which allows "File transfers" without too much effort.
XP with "remote desktop" installed is another option but it doesn’t allow file transfers or remote printing. Using something like GoToMyPC or other remote VPN software is also another possiblity.
